In November  2010, Jamie L. Matthews was elected to serve as Mayor for the City of Santa Clara, the third largest city in Santa Clara County. Located in the center of Silicon Valley with a population of 118,830, Santa Clara is home to some of the nation’s most prominent high technology corporations, including: Applied Materials, Intel, Texas Instruments, and Dell, as well as home to California’s Great America Theme Park.

Prior to being elected Mayor, Jamie Matthews served on the Planning Commission, 1994-1996 and two terms as Council Member, 1998 – 2006. He was re-elected to the City Council in 2008 and served two years until his 2010 election as Mayor.

In addition to serving on the City Council, Mayor Matthews also serves the City of Santa Clara as a Board Member of the Sports & Open Space Authority, Industrial Development Authority, Joint Financing Authority, Stadium Authority, the City’s Housing Authority and the City of Santa Clara Oversight Board Successor Agency.

In addition to his professional duties, Mayor Matthews serves on numerous City committees including the Council Goal Setting Committee, Downtown Plan Committee and as Chair of the Mission City 21 (economic development) Committee.

Regionally, Mayor Matthews represents Santa Clara at the Association of Bay Area Governments General Assembly, the California High-Speed Rail Authority Policymaker Working Group, the Grand Boulevard Task Force, the Peninsula Division of the League of California Cities, the Recycled Water Policy Advisory Committee, the San Jose/Santa Clara Treatment Plant Advisory Committee, and the Silicon Valley Animal Control Authority. He serves on the Board of Directors, City Selection Committee and the Legislative Action Committee on the Santa Clara County Cities’ Association, and as Chair on the SCUSD/City Liaison Committee. He serves as the alternate on the Santa Clara (VTA)Valley Transportation Authority’s North County Cities Group for the Congestion Management Program & Planning Committee, and the Transit Planning and Operations Committee, as well as a member on VTA’s El Camino Bus Rapid Transit Corridor Policy Advisory Board and the Policy Advisory Committee.

A fifth generation Santa Claran, Mayor Matthews’ family came to California with the Donner Party in the late 1800’s and settled in the City of Santa Clara, where he continues his family’s love of Santa Clara by serving the community. He was a key member of the City’s Sesquicentennial Committee in 2002, commemorating Santa Clara’s 150 years as a City. He is a proud husband and father.
